Arizona Literacy and Learning Center

The Arizona Literacy and Learning Center (ALLC) is an 18-year-old 501 (c) 3 tax exempt clinic performing direct client services in developmental & literacy screening, evaluating and treating learning problems and also offering professional training, both on site and off, for the prevention and intervention of learning disabilities. ALLC partnerships allow for the development of applied research entities for “emerging and best practices” in early childhood and dyslexia assessment and instruction.

As part of its umbrella, ALLC houses the National Center for Learning Disabilities’ Southwest Regional Get Ready to Read! Center, the Rite Care Clinic (for diagnosis & treatment of learning disabilities with emphasis on dyslexia) and the Thunderbirds’ Charities Hearing & Vision Center. Major grant partners that fund direct services, parent, teacher, caregiver, intern and fellowship training include: the Valley of the Sun United Way, US and AZ State Departments of Education, Arizona State University, the Phoenix Scottish Rite Foundation, the National Center for Learning Disabilities and the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation Currently ALLC is a leader in community implementation of the AZ State School Readiness Board’s Regional Partnerships and Councils.

Recognition and Response Activities

ALLC’s work with the Emily Hall Tremaine/NCLD project has three prongs: 1) exploring emergent early childhood assessment and instructional practices through the development of a five state consortium, partnerships with NAEYC, and FPG Literature Review project; 2) development of emergent practice teacher training and direct instruction tools that include, a five step ECH Recognition and Response (R & R) strategic change model; R & R Observation and Rating Scale (RRORS), R & R Tool Kit, and a Passport to School Success; and 3) implementation of a two year applied pilot project with the Murphy School District Head Start using the Recognition and Response Model and Tools.

The goal of ALLC’s pilot project is increase the school readiness of young children in a low income area of Phoenix, AZ.  The project combines the AZ School Readiness Board’s ECH Initiatives with the Tremaine Recognition & Response System to develop: 1) Ready Children: assessment of children’s strengths & weaknesses; 2) Ready Teachers: implementation of a 3-tired curriculum & instructional system; 3) Ready Parents: engagement through activities and better awareness of their child’s needs; 4) Ready Schools: a year long development of a Transition Passport for School Success, planning for Kindergarten, and tracking system through the 3rd-grade; and 5) Ready Schools & Communities: systemic change collaborations.  ALLC’s work in implementing this Early Recognition & Response System is designed to identify and support children who may be at-risk for learning differences and disabilities.
